The Walrus Announces New Prize for Poetry

The Walrus

The Walrus has just announced a new prize for Canadian poetry. The Walrus Poetry Prize, valued at $5,000, will be awarded based on the strength of a single poem and the winning poem will appear in the magazine’s December 2012 issue. Also, all finalists for the prize will have their poems published on the magazine’s website and be eligible to win the $1,000 Reader’s Choice Award.

What makes this poetry prize different from others? It’s all in the judging. Poems will be blindly judged, meaning that the author’s names will not be made known until after a winner has been selected. The magazine’s poetry editor, Michael Lista, will narrow down the submissions, but the winner will be chosen by only one judge: Griffin Prize-winning poet Karen Solie.
