The IFOA is coming to town

If you haven't been to Toronto's International Festival of Authors (IFOA) yet, you are missing out. Every year in October, for eleven days, this Festival consistently presents an astonishing group of writers in a wide variety of carefully curated events. Start your planning for 2010, as our friends at Authors at Harbourfront Centre announced today the preliminary line-up for the 31st annual IFOA, running October 20th to 30th, 2010.

IFOA’s preliminary line-up includes 71 authors writing in categories from literary fiction to picture books, narrative non-fiction to graphic novels, poetry to thrillers.

Canadian authors confirmed! David Bergen, Shaughnessy Bishop-Stall, Giles Blunt, Ian Brown, Dionne Brand, Trevor Cole, Charles Foran, Charlotte Gray, Jack Hodgins, Dany Laferrière, Michael Lista, Yann Martel, Kenneth Oppel, Louise Penny, Alison Pick, Julie Roorda, Adam Lewis Schroeder, Matthew Tierney, Priscila Uppal, Jane Urquhart, Michael Wex, Katheleen Winter, Michael Winter, Richard Wright and more.

Also confirmed: heavy-hitters Michael Cunningham, Paul Harding, Jonathan Franzen, Andrea Levy, Jeff Lindsay, David Mitchell, DBC Pierre, John Waters, and Fay Weldon; international stars Paolo Giordano, Claudio Magris, Anchee Min, and Eshkol Nevo; crime-fiction specialists Thomas Perry, Peter Robinson and Lisa Scottoline; two of The New Yorker’s “Top 20 Under 40,” Joshua Ferris and Wells Tower; debut novelists Eleanor Catton and Chevy Stevens; graphic novelists Charles Burns and Dylan Horrocks; and a slew of amazing writers for young lit-lovers.

Tickets to three IFOA special events go on sale this Thursday, June 17:

Oct. 25 – Governor General’s Literary Award shortlist readings: $25/$20 members
Oct. 27 – Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize shortlist readings: $18/$15 members
Oct. 31 – Scotiabank Giller Prize shortlist readings: $25/$20 members

All other IFOA tickets go on sale in September and are priced at $18/$15 for members/Free for students (subject to availability). Some exceptions apply. Please refer to individual event listings.

IFOA also continues to expand its touring programme, IFOA Ontario, with events scheduled in locations throughout the province such as Barrie, Burlington, Midland, Orillia, Owen Sound, Parry Sound, Picton, Port Hope, Sudbury, Uxbridge and Windsor. These satellite events take IFOA authors on the road to connect with audiences beyond downtown Toronto. IFOA Ontario takes place from October 20 to November 6; specific dates to be announced.
